Storage Solutions For Small-Space Living

Posted on

Living in an apartment or small home definitely has its perks.  It can help you save money on rent or mortgage payments, as well as utilities.  Keeping things simple means you can focus more on other activities like work, traveling, and other things you love.  But smaller living has its own challenges too, especially if you have a lot of stuff.  These ideas can help you manage the clutter to live happier any confined space.

Multi-Use Organization Options

Part of the fun of small-space living is getting creative with your organization.  Thinking outside the box can help you figure out the best way to store things.  Storage options that are marketed for use in a particular room, like the kitchen, can be used in other ways as well.  Spice racks are great for storing nail polish, perfume bottles, and other bathroom supplies.  Suspension rods used to hang curtains can also be used to keep things like wrapping paper or vacuum extensions against the wall in a closet.  Think beyond the "intended use" of a product to see if you can make it meet your needs.

Also, when storing things seasonally, you can utilize the same space for different objects.  For example, in the summer you may have a space dedicated to storing gardening supplies, so you can get to them easily.  But you don't use them much in the winter.  Use this same space for snow shovels and ice melt in the winter, and you can then keep your gardening supplies in a less-accessible place.

Storage Unit

A personal storage unit is a great way to hold on to objects you don't need access to immediately, while keeping your home free from clutter.  Many people think storage units are just for long-term storage when certain belongings aren't needed at all, but keeping a unit year-round and rotating what you store inside can be another helpful use.

Seasonal clothes, camping gear, and other items you can only use for half of the year can take up valuable space at home.  So organize your items into shifts: Twice a year, switch out your storage contents with items you've been keeping at home that you now won't use for a few months.

Regular Cleaning and Purging

Along with your semi-annual storage swap, this can be a good time to evaluate what you want to keep and what items to get rid of.  Every home builds up unneeded objects over time: toys that kids are no longer interested in, things you bought but have never used, outgrown clothes, etc.  It's important to sift through these things on a regular basis and either trash them or give to charity.  This will help to keep your home organized and clutter-free.
